A real tour-de-force of porcelain decoration, this magnificent Chinese export porcelain punch bowl is lavishly decorated in famille rose enamels with amazingly detailed Mandarin scenes all within reserves against an elaborately hand-painted ground of flowers and butterflies, the interior as extravagant as the exterior, with two lusciously enameled borders of birds, butterflies and blossoms-one against a rich gold ground, all encircling a central scene of pilgrims resting beneath a tree. The level of detail throughout is amazing. Measuring 14 1/4″ in diameter, and with only one short line to the rim, otherwise very good condition. Circa 1810-1820.
